Viking Feast

To finish our 'Vikings' project,  Primary 3 held a Viking Feast in our classroom last Thursday afternoon.

Only very fierce Vikings were allowed to attend!

We had wonderful entertainment at our feast.

We had singers ....

.... some were accompanied by guitar playing.

There were dancers.

There was fiddle playing.

We had magic tricks.

Now you see it .....

.... now you don't!

Vikings loved listening to stories being told!

I wonder if they would have enjoyed listening to jokes too?

Explorers Day

Last Tuesday everyone at St Andrews was invited to come to school dressed as an explorer for our 'Explorers Day'.  There were some fantastic costumes and we had great fun trying to guess who everybody was!

 For part of the day, we played a trading game, where we had to pretend to be Vikings trading goods with people from other parts of the world; furs and antlers from Bulgar in Russia, timber and fish from Birka in Sweden, amber and silver from Hedeby in Denmark, stone pots and honey from Jorvik in England and silks and spices from Constantinople in Turkey.  We had lots of fun travelling over land or by sea, and trying to make the best deals possible!

Tanzanian Talk

On Friday Hellen Sinclair came to talk to all the children at St Andrews about Tanzania.  Primaries 1, 2 and 3 were fascinated to hear about her work as a volunteer in a school in Tanzania, and to discover how different life is for children living in that part of the world.

Hellen taught us how to say simple greetings in Swahili.

She told us about some of the animals she had seen.

She showed us pictures of some of the homes in Tanzania.

Hellen told us that some people in Tanzania are very poor.

Schools in Tanzania are very different from here.

Children who go to school there are very happy to be there.

National Youth Choir of Scotland Workshop

Last Thursday Lucinda, from the National Youth Choir of Scotland, led singing workshops for both Primary 3 and 4.  We had lots of fun doing various singing and listening activities.

We all took home leaflets giving us information about other National Youth Choir of Scotland workshops which will take place in Orkney later this year.  For further information, please contact the school office.

Maths activities

Last week in maths we were learning about money.  We were learning to recognise coins and notes, counting money totals and setting out coins to make amounts.

We were learning to pay for things in our 'Snack Shop' ........

                .... and to give change.

We were also learning to measure using a centimetre ruler. 

During Outdoor Learning we had to measure various things in the school playground.

We learned that it is important to be as accurate as possible when we measure.

Our trip to St Magnus Cathedral

On Wednesday Primary 3 went on a trip to St Magnus Cathedral.  First of all we visited St Magnus Centre, where we were shown a short film telling the story of St Magnus and the Cathedral.  After that we were shown around the Cathedral by Fran Hollinrake, the Custodian, who told us lots of fascinating information about the history of the building.  Watch out for reports on our trip in our progress jotters!

The Dracula Rock Show

On Tuesday this week we were invited to the Dress Rehearsal of 'The Dracula Rock Show', performed by Primaries 4, 5, 6 and 7.  We really enjoyed the show and had lots of favourite bits.

We were surprised when Dracula suddenly appeared out of the coffin!

We also enjoyed the Blood Sisters singing.

And we loved Frank saying 'The bells, the bells'!

It was a great show! Well done to everyone who took part!
